The Athens Metro system is one of the most modern and best undergrounds in Europe. Since the Olympic games in 2004 many new stations have been added and many more in the pipe line.
Like any large city travelling around using the metro is a must to get around, you can even travel from the airport to Athens using Line 3 Egaleo - Airport. Unlike some metro systems in other cities the Athens metro is fairly easy to use. There are only 3 Lines with 4 interchanges - Monastiraki, Syntagma, Attiki and Omonia
Line 1 Piraeus - Kifissia.
Line 2 Aghios Antonios - Aghios Dimitrios.
Line 3 Egaleo - Airport.

What makes the Athens metro so different from others is that some of the stations display archeological finds like a museum. When building the metro there were thousands of ancient objects found - pottery, statues, even graves! This is no surprise with a city as old and steeped in history as Athens. The best places to see these are the Acropolis, Syntagma and Monastiraki Stations. Monastiraki Station has a small stream flowing through it, you can look down at this and some ancient buildings from inside the station.
